May is Mental Health Awareness Month and yet, this part of the human design deserves to be a daily check-in not limited to one month out of the year.
Because it is something that is foundational to being a productive, high performing professional. Without our mental wellbeing, everything else dominos into a nightmare.
And yet, we can only know and do so much with our conscious, cognitive mind, which according to some scientists amounts to only 5% of who we are. The other 95% is in our subconscious with its BFF, your original essence.
Why do people wait so long to look at what causes un-wellbeing in our mental state, whether hereditary, chemical, or caused by the roots of anxiety and isolation?
Professionals are only valued for their brains and execution of tasks to meet business goals’ and not truly for the 95% beyond our conscious minds that make us beautiful, talented, and unique.
The shame (or blame) and resulting stigma around not being perfect or weak…for being human.
Somehow, the natural occurence of having our reservoirs tapped out with the relentless cycle of change, additional #1 initiatives added to the other ones we’re already working on, and the consequences of honestly saying (e.g., without the emotional charge overflowing), ”This is enough.”
We have to wait until something is at the point that we can’t take it anymore to speak up…because at the deepest root of it all, our value as a professional goes down when we admit we are humans deserving of our own care and nurturing…
As if the fact that we’re on earth isn’t enough reason for us to care for ourselves and others as sovereign beings.
We feel that we have to be forced to take care of ourselves when something happens, like a tipping point in life where we are forced to strip away the bullshit and look at the root that’s been trying to talk with you all along.
that somehow, we believe we’re not worthy enough to be the magical soul embodies and not permitted to bring all of ourselves to work
Companies don’t allow the expression of our purpose because someone, somewhere conjured up that less-than subservience was the only way to profit…for them and that somehow money was a good enough exchange for the talent you give them.
Money has become a distorted expression of our value and that the true potential of our life is not appropriate for work unless you start your own company.
Companies are held back from genuinely treating their employees like human beings, not automatrons, because of the fear of liability claims of “not being qualified” to deal with it?
When did compassion need a qualification?
So much of the anxiety suffered in isolation is due to the lack of connection we have the capacity to give in a work environment because we’re too busy to just hold space and see a colleague in the dark nights of their soul.
That alone, at the root, can eliminate the shame of “not having it together.”
The act of being witnessed, without judgement, shame or advice, is one of the simplest and powerful ways to help someone who is having a moment of mental un-wellbeing.
Instead, the fear litigation, the sterilization of the creation of money akin to enslavement, and the postponement of happiness until one leaves work rob us from immersing into the experiences of life in the place where most of us spend the majority our days…at work.
And, here’s the impact to the business cycle.
Fear feeds upon itself and is amplified at the hidden undercurrent level in an office when it’s not released to give the gift it wants to give in that moment. And, it’s something simple like, “Hey, get up and glass of water…and savor drinking it without distractions. You’re thirsty, you deserve a break, and I’m tried.”
Fear follows you home in the form of anxiety running int he background just like a software upgrade except it doesn’t optimize your performance, it lowers it.
Anxiety seeps into the reboot cycle called sleep, interrupting its restorative powers.
You wake up in a compromised state, vulnerable for more of fear to compound when you return to the office.
Over time, anxiety can trigger other related health issues that wellness programs can treat: Depression, hypertension, weight gain, diabetes. And you know what happens when only symptoms are treated without getting to the root.
Like a weed’s leaves clipped, the roots spread into other parts of your life.
A tipping point comes when you just don’t give a fuck occurs and makes you take care of yourself.
Companies have such a great opportunity to get more out of their employees if they treated them genuinely as more than metric producing machines to reach Point B from Point A, instead of unfortunate collateral damage along the way.
You get paid to do the work but that should not be at the expense of being human. The two kinda go hand in hand.
Mental health is not just a month long thing. It is a conversation you have everyday and has a lot of good information about who you are, why you’re here on earth beyond just working at a job, and why it’s important you know this about yourself…if you listen.
This isn’t about meditation or mindfulness.
It really is about allowing yourself to be human regardless if the company you work for “permits” you to do so.
I believe that your life purpose is foundational to this conversation, otherwise, the conversation you’re having may be with a false identity that doesn’t reflect the vastness of who you really are.
I wouldn’t wait for leaders or management to support this because honestly, it’s not their job to define your purpose. It is only their job to pay you for the value you bring to the company.
Or is it?
The way that money is created through your efforts, if based on fear on scarcity, has a larger impact to the rest of the world as you spend that money in your daily life.
I doubt leaders currently realize how they impact the world at large, so I’ve decided to write a book about it!
Empowerment comes from you to value yourself as the magic you are. Don’t give that power to a company or anyone else - it doesn’t belong to them.
There are many roads to self-actualization that are meant to occur now, even in a shitty job, so I want to encourage you to consider what that means for you. In my experience, it doesn’t involve abandoning your job either. It’s meant to brought to your every day, even a shitty job.
Do understand this in your bones, your life is meant to be lived every day, even at work, not just on the weekends or during vacation.
Until then, if you’re in a state that you can’t even think clearly about it, then please look at the free tools I’m giving to you.
I can promise you that even if they’re not your vibe, something else will be lit up to help you after you just take the simple step of action by clicking on this link.
Wellness doesn’t come from wishing or just reading an article. It comes by taking action and by that, you declare, “I matter enough to myself that I’m going to do something about it.”
And at the subconscious level, you have no idea the power released that gives permission to those around you to do the same even without uttering a word.
