I was assisted by a kind soul who works at Burnham Benefits, a B Corporation, where their unique business model represents the new nature of business. For instance, the president and her team forecast resource needs as all businesses do but hires 1.5 years in advance of the need. Compassion to queue up employees for success is vital to their model, including the minimization of stress before “crunch times” by giving new hires time to assimilate and adjust to the company culture, learn the job for fully.
Why is this important?
They have combined the practice employee wellness (physical health) with that of well-being (the other components of being human) because they value their employees as holistic human beings and know the impact that each employee has in their world, at home, at leisure.
They understand, as an employer, the impact they have on the world in addition to doing all the normal business stuff, like providing a solution for consumers and making a profit.
In capitalistic societies, there has been a slow degradation of the nature of business around the treatment of employees to the point it has a dharma of being perverted.
At the hidden, subconscious level, here what happens in the Business Cycle of Stress:
Not Enough: Competition for more money and promotion.
The normal progression upward is because much value is place on the end game of money and promotion.
The root cause is really around identity and value. If one lacks sovereignty in their original essence identity, a lot of pressure is placed on money or promotions for visibility as a false identity.
While the satisfaction of achieving these is real, often it temporary because the big life question of “who are you?” follows you until it’s answered.
Those missing out on these goals question their value because living someone else’s story (traditional “success”) is better than not having any story at all.
What people seek is to really be seen, heard, and contribute to something meaningful. The endless pursuit of these accolades recycles because if you don’t know who you really are, no one can really see you.
Self Preservation for Survival
With scarcity of rewards, the need to survive extends int other parts of the work life. “Not enough time.” “Too much to do.” as the endless cycle continues.
Unsavory side effects of shame, blame, rejection, judgement become paramount with the false identity of valuation seeps on.
The pain is real when bypassed for the promotion or worse, the gaslighting practice of moving one to the list when unwritten rules are broken.
At a primal level, we needed to belong to a tribe - rejection was fatal, literally. Without unwinding the subconscious script round this type of survival, it is difficult to overcome.
As a result, the machine of fear is fed and the dharma of the business transforms into something darker and gets stronger as time goes on.
Disengagement and Separation
The golden list and the shit list further bifurcates rational thinking. It is unnatural for us to be isolated and yet, that is the norm in modern society.
“My” desk, “My” project, “My’ house, “My’ sidewalk secretly creates possession that excludes others unless sharing. But if you’re experiencing lack, that is seriously challenged.
Worse, the illusion of being alone becomes very real. Especially since it’s not acceptable to talk about woundings in the work place out of fear of that appearing on the performance review as being too sensitive or not a team player in the bigger scheme of things.
Worse, leadership, as they move up the ladder, become more separated from those doing the work. It’s rare for a leader to “walk the floor” to check in with those doing the work in a genuine way and yet, it’s puzzling to observe how one can lead only by numbers without knowing the actual requirements of doing the work.
There are many contributing factors to health issues: Genetic, Environmental and so on. I like to focus on one of the internal ones: Stress .
It can initiate a daisy chain of behaviors: Sleeplessness can cause weight gain, use of sedatives, foggy brain. Which can cause another daisy chain to unwind at the end of the day: Zoning out in front of the TV, drinking a little too much, excessive habits that waste resources like my favorite, online shopping.
More health issues shellack over what’s in motion like hypertension, diabetes, weight gain all diminishing performance.
The profit comes from those solutioning the wellness symptoms with little awareness of the root cause found in the essence of wellbeing.
In my work, stress happens when you leave parts of yourself and power to things outside of present time - in the past (Why did I say that in that meeting?) or the future (My god, my deck better be perfect for the Steering Committee tomorrow).
Your body, your subconscious and soul do not favor gaps so they overcompensate for those parts of yourself you left behind. That means, you have to try and think harder to get through the day, exhausting your resources.
Wellbeing - Break The Business Cycle of Stress
Enough so Mutually Beneficial for All Can Rise
There is room for everyone when you own your agency in life. Space to see your life in the bigger tapestry of humanity diminishes false identity rewards where the day at work becomes the opportunity to express who you really are and be seen in your sovereign power even in a shitty job.
The power of your North Star creates your reality and liberates those around you.
Your authenticity, the mirror of your North Star, liberates those around you at the unspoken word level.
Space to see your work and even a big vision includes everyone, end to end, where there is more than enough space for everyone to contribute.
But someone has to go first. Don’t wait for the “Leaders” to do it because believe me, they are subject to the Business Cycle of Stress. That person might as well be you.
Engagement and connection
Showing up 100% (95% hidden subconscious, soul, original essence + 5% conscious mind) is very appealing and attractive.
Like magnetically attractive because of its rarity, especially at work.
It has the power to engage without empty actions of manipulation because you show up free to speak your suggestions and plan of action.
And people can’t wait to contribute to someones vision, if not a visionary leader, shared with such conviction, logic, and business acumen that they will find a way to join you.
Holistically showing up at work, both from a wellness perspective and a wellbeing, starts with who you every day, not just when the conditions are perfect.
The world changes everyday, new initiatives are born in the office quarterly, and the world landscape tilts one way or the other on the hour.
Stake wellbeing in a clean internal landscape and you will find that profit occurs with more ease.
Postscript: A Book Is Conjured
I’m excited to have been heard by Wanda Wen of Soolip, someone I have admired for decades through her luxury letterpress stationary and eye for curated beauty of all things that enchant, who closed her eyes and said, “You must write a book to change the nature of business.”
Using her encouragement along with the business triggers in the above infographic that affect the bottom line, our book will focus on how addressing the root cause to liberate the new nature of business..
The goal of the new way is to change how money is created by companies that then ripples out into the world at large. The consuming public is looking for opportunities to exchange their money for services and products created by companies that embody a larger purpose that serves, not hurts, the world.
The nature of business is changing and holistic management of both business processes and employees will naturally become the differentiating factor that will get us there.
The new world includes everyone, not just the spiritually devoted, but all of us. Its nature is where all of us rise together as humans were originally designed to do.
I’ll keep you updated on its process and how you can embody the power to change the nature of business and your life.
