As the new year approaches, it's natural to take a few moments to reflect on your successes that occurred during the year that is getting ready for its kiss good-bye.
2017 was a tough one for me as if I were swimming in a riptide, a lot of effort but seemingly not making any headway forward....but I've decided to view it as time tilling the soil, going deep into the darkest of corners in order to plant "clean" seeds that surely will surely take the fast track to flourish in 2018.
I did the following exercise and found great hope and satisfaction in looking back so that I could make sure my aim is true as I turn my head to look forward.
1. Create a 2 column grid, labeling the left one as Seeds and the right one as Flourish.
2. Under Seeds, list your accomplishments, the stuff you pushed through, the things you saw in life's mirror reflection about yourself, and the stuff you just had to get done., you know, the stuff you stepped up to the plate even if you really didn't want to.
3. Under Flourish, reflect on how these experiences serve as a stepping stone towards what you really want, because in reality, everything you do today creates your future. If there was some major suck in your life, then think hard by flipping these negative experiences into its opposite essence so you can see the real reason why things happen for your benefit. This is a twist on intention....seeing 2017 as a continuum and a blessing for 2018.
Here's what mine showed me....like all exercises that I teach, this'll probably not mean a thing to you but it resonated deeply in me because we each have our own internal dictionary of meaning. One experience can resonate different positive reflections for different people.
I hope this exercise fills your with great hope for the new year as you take a chance to celebrate a year well-lived.
In short, all of the tilling and toiling of the past year were really preparing healthy soil for focused freedom, the aim of my North Star. Clarity from removing what wasn't mine and getting really pissed about stuff I didn't like helped me focus on what I really do want with strong commitment.
I celebrate with you all that you have accomplished in 2017 and am so happy that you made room for all the best things in life to come your way in 2018.
Dear Future, we are ready!
